Shelters and Rescue Facilities |
 NO KILL: No-kill facilities are generally privately funded and although there is usually a long waiting list, once an animal enters it is not euthanized unless it is incurably ill or displays extreme behavior making it unadoptable. A true No-Kill shelter is a shelter that will not euthanize just to cut down on the pet population... nor will it send a healthy animal in its care to another facility to be destroyed. No-kill facilities are designated by the smiling cat.
 MUNICIPAL: Municipal shelters, and some of the larger privately funded shelters, accept all animals. As a result they are often forced to euthanize animals based on space and adoptability of the animal. These facilities are designated by the animated cat who is hiding behind a wall.
Disclaimer: There is a fine line between no-kill shelters and shelters that euthanize. Each site was reviewed to determine its category, and then each webmaster was contacted to confirm the accuracy of their listing. However, we can only pass on what we've been told. Also, be aware that policies change... so if you must surrender your pet and care about its welfare, it is your responsibility to ask questions. |
